Bridging the Gap

On the nights of the 8th and 9th January 2021, CRL installed 4no. pairs of braced steel bridge beams as part of the bridge replacement works at Junction 2 of the M53 motorway. Each pair of beams, 24 metres in length, had the permanent soffit shutters installed prior to delivery on site so as to save time afterwards. This made a total weight of approximately 24 tonnes for each pair of beams, and these were lifted into place using a 350 tonne crane. The beams were fixed directly onto the spherical bearings which were loosely installed and levelled up on the re-constructed half joints.
